Where would you expect to find London’s largest localised cluster of practising artists, craft makers and designers? You might be surprised to know it’s on the south side of the Thames by the Thames Barrier between Charlton and Woolwich in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

Open Studios – What is it?

The bi-annual SFSA Open Studios are the highlight of the arts organisations calendar, a 3 day art, craft and design show. It’s the perfect event for SFSA’s membership and vibrant hub of over 400 artists, printmakers, craft makers and designers to showcase their individual practices, by opening their studio doors and exhibit their works of art, craft and design for the public to view and also buy directly from the artists and makers commission-free. It also allows for a great platform for networking and wider community engagement for all the family.

A wide variety of work available across many disciplines and practises including: Architecture, Bookbinding, Cabinetmaking, Ceramics, Clockmaking, Digital, Drawing, Fashion & Accessories, Fine Art, Furniture Design, Garden Design, Glass, Illustration, Jewellery & Silversmithing, Moving Image, Photography, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Textiles & Costume and Writing - there is certainly something of interest for everyone…

May 2013 Open Studios attracted over 3,000 visitors, many regulars and lots of new faces from all parts, making it one of the largest single site Open Studios in the UK.

SFSA were delighted and honoured this year to win a Civic Award from the Royal Borough of Greenwich for recognition for outstanding contribution to the social, economic and physical wellbeing of the Royal Borough.

SFSA is London’s largest single site affordable studio space project for visual and fine artists, craft makers and designers. Occupying over 135,000 sqft of deindustrialised space within 8 buildings on a seven acre site on Harrington Way, Woolwich.

SFSA was established by Matthew Wood in 1997. The company and membership organisation relocated to its current site on Harrington Way, Woolwich in 2009 and has work alongside site owners and capital funding partners Emafyl Properties for the past 6 years. Emafyl’s continued capital investment programme which continues to this date led to the recent property acquisition of Telegraph Building. The first 30 first floor studios where released in March this year. 41 further first and second floor studios are due to be released in July, and an additional 50 ground floor craft studios are due to be delivered and ready for occupation late 2014 early 2015.

The continued expansion of the studio provision on site will see SFSA’s membership exceed 500 by 2015 making it by far the largest project of its kind in the UK.

SFSA 2014 programming is very much about outreach, not just in local communities but internationally as well. March this year SFSA hosted a visit from a delegation of cultural sector leaders from Bangladesh. Mélanie Courtois from Ateliers Creatife Montreal was researcher in residence in the same month. This coming September is also a month of cultural exchange as SFSA welcome back for a second visit their craft and designer friends CAMPOBAG from Taipei City, Taiwan.

SFSA founder and director Matthew Wood is actively engaged in the wider advocacy for the affordable studio space sector in London and in other national regions, working closely with the GLA, Crafts Council and Regeneration Agencies. Working towards developing a long-term strategy that genuinely supports a sustainable affordable sector now and for future generations of artists, craft makers and designers to come.
