I find an accidental poetry in the ordinary and overlooked details of the busy city and I make my ceramics in response to these surroundings. I look for ways to re-contextualise the everyday, to reveal the poetry, and to allow others to share the quiet beauty I find in these humble things.
I take an experimental approach to ceramic processes and materials to create objects with surfaces that apparently carry the traces of time and use or reflect the colours and textures of urban neglect.
My process often starts with photography, working with and manipulating images as a way of absorbing and understanding them, shifting elements and details to identify areas of interest.
Then a ceramic exploration as I start to make forms, experiment with texture and surface and establish a palette of materials and glazes for a series of pieces. I often think best through making and enjoy the immediacy of clay and the direct response of the material.
Firing adds another layer to the making and I often use multiple firings with different materials to try to capture the qualities I was drawn to in the source material. Making slowly develops into more realised and resolved ceramic objects and artefacts though an iterative process, often an extended series of works around a specific source reference point.
I am happy to take commissions or I often have work available for sale from my studio.
